Rockets and BGCGH Team Up to Combat Summer Learning Loss

In an effort to keep kids engaged in activities that help them continue to learn during the summer, the Havard Boys and Girls Club and the Houston Rockets teamed up to pilot the Rockets Summer Learning Camp.  In addition to the overall Club experience, more than 400 members participated in fun, high-yeild learning activities.  Each week of the Summer Camp featured a different theme that highlighted learning objectives in the areas of science, geography, math and language arts.

The themed weeks included:  Outer Space, Human Body, Wild Kingdom, Ocean, Archaeology and Music.  To learn more about each theme’s curriculum, please contact Shon Dorsey, Program Manager.

In addition to the Summer Camp at the Club, several members participated in the Rockets Orientation field trip, which gave a behind-the-scenes look at the Houston Rockets organization and potential career opportunities in world of sports!  Participants in the Rockets Orientation were offered mini-internships to experience hands-on learning of the different departments that make up a sports franchise.

We were excited to pilot this year’s Summer Camp at the Havard Club and look forward to next summer’s potential.

Lemonade Day

On May 1, 2011, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston had nearly 1,000 participants from our 10 Clubs set up lemonade stands in the Houston area.

Prior to Lemonade Day, members from each Club participated in a month-long training session designed to teach members about the fundamentals of entrepreneurship.  The Lemonade Day curriculum includes:  setting goals; planning and budgeting; securing an investor; selecting a site; advertising; building a lemonade stand; purchasing resources; making lemonade; setting up; running the business; accounting and banking; giving back to the community; and reflecting for future planning.  Following training, members put what they learned into ACTION!  Click HERE to view photos of lemonade stands around Houston.

Lemonade Day is a nationwide program held every year that enables youth learn about what it takes to start and run a business.  The program originated in Houston and was founded by Lisa and Michael Holthouse of Prepared 4 Life and the Holthouse Foundation for Kids.  In just four years, Lemonade Day has spread to 31 cities with a goal of one million stands in 100 cities by 2013!
